What is a Resistor Color Code Calculator?
A resistor color code calculator helps you determine the resistance value of a resistor by reading its colored bands. Each band represents a digit, multiplier, tolerance, or temperature coefficient. This tool supports 4-band, 5-band, and 6-band resistors.
How to Read Resistor Color Codes
- Select the number of bands on your resistor (4, 5, or 6)
- Click the color for each band, starting from the band closest to one end
- The calculator instantly shows the resistance value
- Check the tolerance range and nearest standard E-series values
- For 6-band resistors, also view the temperature coefficient
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know which end to start reading from?
Start from the band closest to one end of the resistor. The tolerance band (gold or silver) is usually the last band and often has a slightly larger gap from the other bands.
What is the difference between 4, 5, and 6 band resistors?
4-band resistors have 2 digit bands, a multiplier, and tolerance. 5-band resistors add a third digit for higher precision. 6-band resistors add a temperature coefficient band.
What are E-series standard values?
E-series are internationally standardized sets of preferred resistor values. E12 has 12 values per decade, E24 has 24. The calculator shows the nearest standard value to help you find available components.
