What is a Unit Converter?

A Unit Converter is a tool that translates measurements from one unit of measure to another within the same physical quantity. It supports 8 categories — Length, Weight/Mass, Temperature, Volume, Area, Speed, Time, and Digital/Data — covering 80 units with exact conversion factors. Temperature conversions use mathematical formulas (not simple multiplication) to handle the offset between scales like Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin, and Rankine. All conversions happen instantly in the browser with no server communication.

How to Use This Unit Converter

  1. Select a conversion category (Length, Weight, Temperature, etc.) from the tabs at the top
  2. Choose the source unit from the 'From' dropdown and enter your value
  3. Choose the target unit from the 'To' dropdown — the result appears instantly
  4. Use the swap button (↔) to reverse the conversion direction
  5. Scroll down to the quick-reference table to see all equivalent values at once

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Multiply the Celsius value by 9/5 and add 32. For example, 25°C = (25 × 9/5) + 32 = 77°F. This converter handles the formula automatically for all four temperature scales (°C, °F, K, °R).

What is the difference between a US gallon and an imperial gallon?

A US gallon equals approximately 3,785 mL (3.785 liters), while an imperial gallon is about 4,546 mL (4.546 liters). The imperial gallon is roughly 20% larger than a US gallon.

Does KB mean 1,000 bytes or 1,024 bytes?

This converter uses the SI (decimal) convention: 1 KB = 1,000 bytes, 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes. The binary convention (1 KiB = 1,024 bytes) uses different prefixes (KiB, MiB, GiB) per the IEC 80000-13 standard.

How accurate are the conversion results?

All conversion factors use standard reference values (NIST, ISO). Calculations are performed with JavaScript double-precision floating-point arithmetic (about 15-17 significant digits). Results are displayed with smart formatting that uses scientific notation for very large or very small numbers.
