DNA Sequence Translator
A free online DNA sequence translator that converts DNA to complementary strand, reverse complement, mRNA, and protein in all 6 reading frames. Features color-coded codon display, start/stop codon highlighting, GC% statistics, and FASTA export — all processed locally in your browser with no data uploaded.

What is a DNA Sequence Translator?
A DNA sequence translator converts a DNA nucleotide sequence into its corresponding complementary strand, reverse complement, messenger RNA (mRNA), and amino acid protein sequence. Translation uses the standard genetic code (codon table) to map each three-nucleotide codon to one of 20 amino acids or a stop signal. This tool performs 6-frame translation to help identify open reading frames (ORFs) in both forward and reverse orientations.
How to Use This Translator
- Enter or paste your DNA sequence in the input field (only A, T, G, C characters are used)
- View the complementary strand, reverse complement, and mRNA automatically
- Check sequence statistics including length, GC content, and molecular weight
- Examine the 6-frame protein translation with highlighted start and stop codons
- Export the translated protein in FASTA format or copy individual results
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between complement and reverse complement?
The complement replaces each base with its pair (A↔T, G↔C) in the same direction. The reverse complement does the same but also reverses the sequence, giving the antisense strand in 5'→3' orientation — the form typically used for primer design and database searches.
What is 6-frame translation?
A DNA sequence can be read in three reading frames on each strand (frames +1, +2, +3 on the sense strand and -1, -2, -3 on the antisense strand). 6-frame translation shows the protein produced by each frame, helping identify open reading frames (ORFs).
What do the colors in the codon table mean?
Amino acids are colored by their chemical properties: nonpolar (hydrophobic) in blue, polar (uncharged) in green, positively charged in red, negatively charged in purple, and stop codons in gray.
