What is a Discount & Markup Calculator?
A Discount & Markup Calculator determines final selling prices by applying percentage-based discounts or markups to original costs. It handles three key pricing concepts: discount (reducing a price by a percentage), markup (adding a percentage to cost), and margin (profit as a percentage of selling price). This tool also converts between margin and markup — a common source of confusion in business pricing. The batch mode allows you to build complete pricing tables with different margins per product, making it ideal for retail, restaurants, and e-commerce businesses.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Markup is the percentage added to the cost price (based on cost), while margin is the percentage of the selling price that is profit (based on selling price). For example, if an item costs $60 and sells for $100, the markup is 66.7% ($40/$60) but the margin is 40% ($40/$100). A 50% markup only gives you a 33.3% margin.
How do I calculate a discount from the original and sale price?
Discount % = ((Original Price - Sale Price) / Original Price) × 100. For example, if an item was $80 and is now $60, the discount is ((80-60)/80) × 100 = 25% off.
What markup should I use for retail products?
Markup varies by industry. Grocery stores typically use 5–25%, clothing retail 50–100% (keystone markup), electronics 5–20%, jewelry 50–200%, and restaurants 200–400% on food items. Consider your overhead costs, competition, and target market when setting markup.
Can I use this for multiple products with different markups?
Yes! The Batch Pricing mode lets you add multiple items, each with its own cost, quantity, and markup/discount percentage. You can mix discount and markup modes in the same table and see the combined totals with overall margin and markup. You can also export the pricing table as CSV.
